“Sandra Antognazzi’s strikingly quiet, powerful presence made each stretched calligraphic pose count...” The New York Times
Born and raised in Argentina, Sandra discovered her passion for dance during her teenage years and has never looked back since. Initially, she specialized in modern dance as a concert performer, training with master teachers in both modern and ballet styles. In Argentina, Sandra performed with renowned Argentine choreographer Ana Maria Stekelman, whose innovative work introduced her to Argentine tango. Early on, she began teaching dance while continuing to develop her skills as a performer. Sandra's love for teaching stems from her desire to help others find joy, self-expression, and a sense of community in their dance journeys.
After relocating to New York and performing with various companies as a principal dancer, Sandra felt the need to reconnect with her cultural roots. She decided to incorporate tango into her work. Sandra learned tango as a social dance that emphasizes improvisation and connection, traveled to Argentina to learn from master instructors, partnered with celebrated Argentine tango dancers, and toured with numerous tango shows both in the US and internationally. She also established her own dance company, FUSION TANGO, in 2000.
Sandra’s most recent tango credits include performing, directing and choreographing for Pablo Aslan’s Avantango, Todo Tango with the Arturo O'Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Tango & Tango with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Leonardo Suarez Paz’ Cuartetango, Ensemble Romulo Larrea's Tangos de Gardel a Piazzolla in venues such as Town Hall, Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall, Queens Theater in the Park Summer Festival, Spanish Repertory Theater.
Sandra has extensive teaching experience, having served as an adjunct faculty member at Ramapo College’s School of Contemporary Arts from 2002 to 2024. She has taught dance at various institutions, including Bergen Community College, You Should Be Dancing studio, the Center for Modern Dance Education, and the Park Performing Arts Center. Sandra holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from SUNY Empire State University, which has allowed her to deepen her research in movement, dance, and teaching philosophies.
In 2011, Sandra opened Hoboken Tango Lab to provide a welcoming space for her students who followed her from different studios. The goal has always been to create a supportive environment where people can learn new skills, enjoy themselves, dance, and connect with others.
